The Challenge: Overcoming Manual Bottlenecks at a Global Scale
For a massive, globally recognized sportswear and apparel brand, managing back-office operations across international supply chains requires processing an astronomical volume of data. In 2020, the company was facing significant operational drag due to highly repetitive, manual data entry tasks. Thousands of invoices, purchase orders, and shipping manifests were being processed by human workers, leading to inevitable bottlenecks, increased error rates, and high operational costs.
The client realized that piecemeal automation would not be sufficient. The true challenge was two-fold: they needed to automate complex workflows that relied heavily on unstructured documents, and they needed to establish a centralized, scalable governance framework—an Automation Center of Excellence (CoE)—to standardize how robotic automation would be built, deployed, and maintained across the entire global enterprise.

Our Approach: Establishing Governance and Intelligent Automation
Operating as a consultant for a top-tier global consulting firm, I played a pivotal role in both the strategic foundation of the CoE and the hands-on technical execution of high-priority automation pipelines.
Architecting the Center of Excellence (CoE)
Before deploying any bots, we first had to lay the groundwork for enterprise-wide scalability. I helped design and implement the Automation CoE, defining the strict governance models, security protocols, and development lifecycles required for a corporation of this size. This CoE framework ensured that every future automation initiative would align with the brand's global IT standards, preventing the creation of unmanageable "shadow IT" bots.
Deploying Automation Anywhere and OCR Integration
With the CoE established, I led the technical development of several critical Robotic Process Automation (RPA) integrations using the Automation Anywhere platform. To solve the challenge of unstructured data, standard rule-based RPA was not enough.
We engineered "intelligent" bots by integrating advanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Intelligent Document Processing capabilities. I designed workflows where software robots could automatically intercept incoming vendor documents, use OCR to "read" and extract highly specific data points (like line-item pricing or tracking numbers) from scanned PDFs, validate that data against business rules, and autonomously input the clean data directly into the company's central ERP systems without any human intervention.

The dual approach of establishing a robust CoE and deploying intelligent, OCR-backed bots delivered immediate and scalable value to the sportswear brand's global operations.
A Blueprint for Global Automation
The successfully launched CoE provided the client with a permanent, standardized blueprint for automation. It empowered different business units across the globe to identify automation opportunities and funnel them through a controlled, highly efficient development pipeline, ensuring long-term maintainability and ROI.
Eliminating Manual Data Entry
On the operational side, the specific Automation Anywhere bots we deployed drastically reduced the manual workload for the back-office teams. By successfully automating the extraction and processing of complex, unstructured documents, we reclaimed thousands of hours of human effort. Processing times for critical supply chain documents were reduced from days to minutes, and data entry error rates dropped to near zero, significantly streamlining the financial and logistical operations of the enterprise.
