By 2018, the food delivery market in Madrid was growing at an unprecedented rate, but it was heavily saturated and dominated by major aggregators pushing fast food and heavily processed options. For health-conscious consumers and expats craving authentic, home-cooked meals, the options were frustratingly limited. A local Madrid startup identified this critical gap in the market and set out to create a curated delivery platform dedicated entirely to traditional family restaurants offering high-quality, homemade food—strictly excluding fast-food chains.
While the business proposition was incredibly strong, the technical execution presented several unique hurdles. Traditional family-run restaurants in Madrid often possessed limited technical literacy and were accustomed to paper tickets and phone orders. Introducing complex digital workflows into their busy, high-pressure kitchens risked operational chaos. Therefore, we needed an incredibly intuitive order-receiving terminal that required zero training. Simultaneously, on the consumer side, the startup required a premium, highly responsive iOS application that visually communicated the high-quality nature of the culinary offerings. The overarching challenge was to build and launch this dual-sided custom software solution from scratch within an aggressive six-month timeframe, ensuring seamless communication between the diners, the traditional kitchens, and the delivery fleet.

Our Approach: Forward-Thinking Frontend and Streamlined Terminals
To meet the strict six-month deadline and deliver a premium user experience, I took charge of managing the frontend development ecosystem. My strategy focused on utilizing modern, highly efficient frameworks that could deliver rapid results without compromising on performance or visual fidelity.
Pioneering with Flutter for iOS
For the consumer-facing iOS application, I managed the development using Flutter. In 2018, adopting Flutter was a forward-thinking, innovative choice that allowed us to build a natively compiled, highly fluid user interface. I oversaw the implementation of a visually rich, image-heavy UI that highlighted the appeal of home-cooked meals. We focused heavily on the user journey, ensuring that browsing curated family restaurants, customizing orders, and tracking deliveries felt frictionless and premium, matching the brand's core ethos.
Building a Frictionless Javascript Kitchen Terminal
To solve the operational challenges within the traditional restaurants, I managed the development of a lightweight, dedicated order-receiving terminal built entirely in JavaScript. This progressive web application was designed to run on inexpensive tablets provided to the restaurant owners. We stripped away all unnecessary features, focusing on a high-contrast, large-button interface with audible alerts for incoming orders. The JS terminal allowed kitchen staff to accept, delay, or mark orders as ready with a single tap, bridging the digital gap for non-technical users.
Agile Integration with the Laravel Backend
While a separate team handled the core backend architecture in Laravel, the success of the platform relied on tight integration between the Flutter iOS app, the JS terminal, and the database. To ensure this seamless digital integration, I stepped beyond pure management and directly contributed to the backend layer by writing custom SQL queries and creating specific Laravel views. This hands-on approach guaranteed that the complex data flow—from a user placing an order on their iPhone to the ticket popping up on the kitchen tablet—was executed with absolute precision and zero data loss.

The JavaScript order-receiving terminals were a massive success. Traditional family restaurants, many of which had never partnered with a delivery service before, found the technology completely unobtrusive. The foolproof design eliminated the learning curve, allowing chefs to focus entirely on cooking high-quality food rather than troubleshooting software. This operational success allowed the startup to rapidly onboard a highly exclusive roster of Madrid's best hidden culinary gems.
